Uamanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto was fully represented at the 2022 NUGA games in Lagos state university
The team representing Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has joined other 75 Universities at the University of Lagos in the ongoing Nigeria University Game Association (NUGA) in order to kick off the 2022 NUGA games on Saturday March 19. The event which began March 16 will end March 27 with different sporting events to be competed which include; football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, athletics, hockey, judo, cricket, chess, karate, table tennis, boxing, swimming, handball, squash, taekwondo and tennis.
According the Chief of Staff CTC Udus, Ibrahim Khalifa said Udus won their first basketball match with Federal university Alex Ekweme with total point of 22-21. Also, Udus also won their first handball match with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with total point of 16-14 while it lost their first volleyball match with Obafemi Awolowo university with 3 straight point.
Idris Adeyemi, one of the Udus participant, showed satisfactory and happiness for coming for the nuga game event ongoing at Unilag.
“I will encourage Udus Management to put more effort and interest in sporting activities in our university campus and encourage ladies to participate in sport activities because most institutions came with ladies but it is only udus that came with only male,” he advised UDUS management while expressing his delight for being part of UDUS team.
Meanwhile, the NUGA opening ceremony contained the Nigeria Anthem, introductions of dignitaries, march past by the participating universities and display by students of Unilag in styles. All the participated Universities were recognized and welcomed to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos state.
The president of Nigerian University Game Association (NUGA), Prof Stephen Hamafyelto, said the winner of the NUGA games will represent Nigeria Universities in the upcoming World University Game.
In his own part, the Vice-Chancellor of Unilag, Prof Ogundipe noted that as a host, the institution had put all necessary things in place to ensure successful games.
“Today, we stand in the Threshold of history to commence the 26th NUGA and the fouth of its kind to be hosted by Unilag.”
The Pro-Chancellor of Unilag, Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso recognized the presence of Usmanu Danfodiyo Universities, citing Udus as a case study of an institution that promotes unity and peace which you can find different tribes and ethnics in the institution.
The Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Saturday, performed the lighting of the 2022 Nigeria Universities Games torch at the sports Centre, University of Lagos, Akoka, amidst fanfare. In his welcome speech, Femi Gbajabiamila described sports as a veritable tool for unification among different ethnic backgrounds and religions.
Other dignitaries that were present in the NUGA opening ceremony include, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, while Lagos State Governor was represented by Sola Aiyepeku, the managing Director of GTco, Segun Agbaje and some hippop musician like 9nice, Pheelz and others performed live on stage.
